I have a high school reunion coming up. Some of the class officers thought it would be nice if we did something positive with our time instead of making eating and drinking our sole focus. It was decided that we would start a Relay for Life team, and I was selected as captain to promote the campaign.
I attended high school in a small, rural, low-income town. I now live about 3 hours away, and will not be visiting my hometown in the 90-day span between the inception of our team and the Relay for Life event. So to effectively raise funds, I turned to Facebook.
In the first 24 days, we raised $2501. I understand this is not a high dollar number – but please note that this was done exclusively via Facebook and online donations with no corporate support. If we are able to continue this pace, we will raise about $10,000, without the team captain ever leaving his virtual office.
I believe this is another powerful example of how effectively social media can spread a message. We all need to continue to make sure that we leverage that tool to promote our businesses and our ideas. Please feel free to share any stories of social media helping your business or causes.
And if anyone would like to consider a donation to our campaign, please use this link:
