If your insurance agency has not yet started on your insurance agency SEO (or an insurance agency search engine marketing initiative), consider these 5 basic steps to move forward, and to do so quickly.
- Create a list of you preferred keyword phrases. Examples of this include: New York Liability Insurance, Connecticut Business Insurance, Owner Operator Insurance or Group Health Insurance. These are called long tail keyword phrases and need to appear prominently on your agency website. Financial professionals should be able to determine many of these without assistance as they are mentioned in your ever day discussions, and then should review these phrases in Google AdWords, a free and simple tool provided by Google.
- Select the best phrases for your agency after reviewing them in Google AdWords using both competitive and less competitive phrases. Even searches that occur 10 times a month can be valuable to your insurance agency marketing plans.
- Incorporate these phrases into your insurance website. Target 6% as an ideal keyword density (as of this writing) for each of your best phrases. This is easier if you have a page dedicated to a particular type of coverage. For example, if your agency was in Connecticut and you have a page dedicated to group health insurance, your agency should target a 6% density for this phrase (Connecticut Group Health Insurance) on that page. An oversimplification of this would be that this phrase would appear six times for every 100 words on that website page (the formula is a little more complicated than this – but this is the basic concept).
- Add this phrase to the HTML coding on your website. You may need a technical person or “coder” to do this for your agency. These should be added to the meta description and meta keywords to start. There are many other places within the actual HTML code that allows for keyword phrase addition, but at a minimum, start with the meta keywords and description.
- Add these keyword phrases to your insurance agency blog. If you don’t have an integrated website blog, your insurance agency should add one right away. Insurance agency blogs optimize content creation and help with both agency SEO and insurance search engine marketing. Remember, if you have very little content, there is little for the search engine robots (Google, Bing, etc.) to index. Blogs offer a great way to provide relevant content to clients, prospects, and yes, to the search engine indexing “bots” too.
Of course, these are just the basics for an insurance SEO initiative. There are much more sophisticated tools available than those provided for free, and many sophisticated nuances to insurance SEO and search engine marketing (sometimes referred to as Search Marketing Optimization). That said, there is nothing wrong with a “crawl, walk, run” approach, and these basics can help move your agency past the infancy stage of your insurance SEO program.
Follow these basic steps and you’ll be walking before you know it. However, if your agency is a sprinter as opposed to a walker, you can outsource your insurance agency search engine marketing initiative to a reputable insurance marketing agency and get off to a running start.

When considering an update, refresh or complete overhaul of your insurance agency website it is important that you work with a website developer who can provide all the critical components of an effective site. Many vendors are able to create an attractive site, but may not fully understand insurance agency SEO. Other vendors who possess the technical acumen for pristine coding may lack the skill set needed for effective insurance agency social media marketing. When you decide it is time to work on your site, make sure you have access to these five skill sets:
- Graphic Design, Look & Feel
- Coding and Technical Development
- Insurance Agency SEO
- Insurance Agency Social Media Marketing
- Video & YouTube Development
Many organizations provide one or two of these skill sets, but all five are required to develop an effective insurance agency website in 2012. Make sure you have access to all the tools your need to achieve the desired results of your website investment.

I’ve now published over 100 articles on Ezine and track metrics on a weekly basis. My overall goal is to create relevant content germane to our target markets including, B2B Marketing, marketing for technology firms, Law firm marketing and Insurance Agency Marketing. The key marketing metrics provided by Ezine include views, clicks and click through rate. These can vary dramatically, as a popular and well viewed article doesn’t necessarily generate the best Click Through Rate (CTR). In the example below, the #1 article received the most clicks (that makes sense) but the #3 article, though viewed significantly less had a much higher CTR and as a result, almost as many clicks.
- Should You Hire an Agency Producer Without a Producer Marketing Plan
- Traditional Magazines Vs Online Magazines – A Short Term Win and Long Term Rout
- Are the Days of Direct Mail Marketing Dead For Insurance Agencies?
- The 4 Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss – Fact Or Fiction
- Insurance Agency SEO – Search Engine Optimization and Long Tail Keywords
Narrow or niche articles can often generate the best results. for example, my article entitled “Create A Virtual Buyer Persona – Spend Time With Prospects Who Can and Will Buy” had a very high CTR (16%) but ranked much lower on total views. In general, one can assume that a mix of topics, both broad and narrow, balance readership with CTR. Ongoing monitoring and measurement is always helpful with Social Media Marketing initiatives.

Keywords, which are really keyphrases, come in many varieties. There are short, broad terms like “car insurance” and there are longtail keywords like “collector car insurance” or “Boston car insurance”. Car insurance differs in many ways from the other two – it will have many more searches every month. As such, people will see it much more often….

Keyword density, simply stated, is the number of times a keyword appears on your web page divided by the number of total words on the page. For example, let’s say your keyword is insurance and it appears 5 times on a page that has 100 words. Your keyword density for insurance is 5%. The formula expressed here might look like this: K/TW*100 = Density where K is the keyword and TW is the total words on your web page, or in our example 5/100*100=5%. The formula is modified for long tail keywords by factoring in the number of keywords used in the long tail phrase….

A great feature of WordPress integrated blogs is the ability to monitor what search engine keyword phrases are driving your blog traffic. Many are obvious, some are vaguely intuitive, and others are just odd. Here are a few I recently saw on my tracking list from Google, Yahoo & Bing:

Insurance Agency eMarketing is often described as an art and a science, but the basics should be simple enough for any agent to follow. Unfortunately I’ve seen many basic rules broken by agents sending out emails that use colored fonts, capital letters in the subject line, and prolific use of spam words like “free offer” that are almost guaranteed to send an email to a junk folder. The list below are the top 10 tips to help ensure insurance agency eMarketing success.
Social media marketing is moving front and center when it comes to insurance agency web marketing strategies. Insurance agents should be cognizant of this new frontier, perhaps changing the famous quote of “Go West, young man, go West” as popularized by author Horace Greeley to “Go Web young man (and woman) go web”. As social media websites for business go, surely LinkedIn is one of the most preeminent, and one that insurance agents and agencies should leverage in their daily routine. Here are 10 tips to help better leverage your LinkedIn experience.
Many insurance agency executives seem interested in improving profits and boosting bottom line performance. The new virtual business model offers many agencies an opportunity to accomplish this, without drastic cultural changes, personnel reductions or significant technology infrastructure investment. Insurance agencies, agents and brokers can actually deliver greater value as a result of a virtual operation, as it affords more time for productive tasks, like conversing with clients, learning the nuances of client businesses and staying current with industry changes.
We are all aware of the relevance and increasing importance of social media marketing. It is powerful and it can be very profitable. Where else can you find high-quality prospect leads for free? In the B2B insurance agency marketing space, LinkedIn is the king of social media marketing.B2B social media marketing has become an increasingly important component of our insurance agency lead generation strategy, and one that we expect will continue to grow in the future. Here are a few suggestions that will help insurance agencies, brokers and agents find prospects and close business using LinkedIn…
Your insurance agency website is your window to the world. It is your store front window, located on Main Street, in a global village in which everyone now lives. When prospects or clients stroll past your window, in this case your agency website, will they like what they see? Will they immediately understand your unique value proposition, will you look like a viable, professional agency, or will you convey a tired, dated, out of touch organization, replete with peeling paint and an antiquated facade? Will you have an up to date window display, current internet fixtures like videos and a blog, and will your graphics and photos help articulate the professional image your agency seeks?
The 4-Hour Workweek offers readers a completely different perspective on the working world as most would perceive the nine to five grind. Tim Ferris changes the rules of the 40 plus hour work week and offers a glimpse into a much more abbreviated work schedule centered on a new lifestyle design. He changes his own lifestyle from an obsessive 12 hours a day workaholic to a globetrotting, virtual 4-hour work week of the “new rich”. The author proposes that we empower ourselves with a new perception on the working world. He suggest that people embrace a “New Deal”, changing the rules of the game, outsourcing mundane task, automating important aspects of businesses including cash flow and enabling a more mobile and flexible lifestyle.
I recently read Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard. A friend recommended it to me and I found it very interesting. Chouinard is the founder and owner of the outdoor company Patagonia. My initial reaction to the book was that I love Patagonia’s business concept. To lead by example, Patagonia donates 1% of their total annual sales to environmental causes. I found this to be very impressive, but it also led me to be reflective.
Every great company has a key defining concept. Something that is woven into the fabric of people, products and culture. For example, 3M strives to use innovative technology and imagination to improve the daily lives of people. This concept becomes obvious when reviewing their history and how the company operates each day. The immense challenge for businesses or in this case, insurance agents, who want to achieve tremendous success like 3M, is to define that key concept – and then to make all decisions in alignment with that concept. Successful insurance agency sales and marketing cultures should be built the same way.
